As you stroll through the village of Nozawa Onsen, a small building catches your eye amidst the wafting scent of sulfur. This is “Kumano Tearai-yu,” a communal bath beloved by the villagers.
The name of this hot spring holds an intriguing legend. Long ago, a wounded bear discovered this spring, washed its wounds, and found healing. From this tale, the name “Kumano Tearai-yu” (Kumano Hand-Washing Hot Water) was born.
Among the villagers, this hot spring is renowned for its incredible effectiveness in treating cuts and burns. Its reputation has even drawn people from neighboring areas to Nozawa for hot spring cures. It’s said to be gentle on babies’ sensitive skin, more effective than hospital medicines. Truly, it’s a treasure of Nozawa Onsen.
Kumano Tearai-yu is believed to be one of the oldest hot springs in Nozawa Onsen, considered by some to be the birthplace of the village’s hot spring culture.
While Nozawa Onsen’s outdoor baths are known for their high source temperatures, Kumano Tearai-yu is comparatively lower at around 40°C (104°F). This makes it popular among hot spring beginners for its ease of entry.
Stepping into the building, you’ll find the changing area and bath in the same space. This is a characteristic of Nozawa Onsen’s outdoor baths. While it might surprise first-timers, you’ll quickly get used to it.
The bath is divided into two sections: hot water and tepid water. The greenish water is smooth and comforting. As you enjoy the scent of sulfur, you can slowly warm your body.
There’s no scenic view outside the window, but that’s okay. Here, you simply soak in the water and heal both body and mind. It’s almost like a spiritual training experience.
Kumano Tearai-yu is located in the northwestern end of Nozawa Onsen. While there’s no parking nearby, it’s recommended to stop by during a stroll.
